METR Shifts Focus from Autonomous Replication to AI R&D Acceleration
Joel Becker · Measuring Exponential Trends Rising (in AI) — Joel Becker, METR · Feb 27, 2026 · at 3:38
Joel Becker of METR discusses how threat modeling focus areas have shifted from autonomous replication toward recursive AI R&D explosions in research labs.
“So, something like the autonomous replication threat model, that is being able to set yourself up and control resources, something like that, has been deprioritized relative to AR and D acceleration. That is, you know, the possibility there could be some capabilities explosion inside of a lab, and that could be destabilizing for all sorts of reasons that we could talk about. So it's mainly, mainly we're focusing on that latter one, although, although we do think about a number of trend models.”
