Mailchimp co-founder Ben Chestnut explains why serving early-stage small businesses required multi-year patience as founders cycled through initial failure before achieving commercial success.
“And it would take them quite a while to convert. I don't think most businesses would have the patience to wait for these customers because you'd see them come in and start a business, set up a MailChimp account, try to do something with a business. They would fail. They would shut down their business, but they would keep their MailChimp account open. They'd get a job somewhere. They would learn how business actually runs. Then they'd quit again after three years or so, go back to their MailChimp account, start their business again, and do well the second time around. So that's, you're talking about like a sales pipeline that was like seven to 10 years.”
