Jordan: Great Tech Products Fail Without Synchronized Sales and Marketing

Nick Jordan, founder and CEO of Narrative.io, reflects on his transition from product management to CEO and learning how functional business units interconnect.
“Making a company successful requires sort of all the different teams, all of the different functional areas within the company to be successful, to do well, and to work with each other. Having come from a product management background, I thought product management was the center of the world. I thought if you build a great product, you know, the rest is sort of ancillary because, you know, especially in technology companies, it's all about product, product, product. But in reality, you could have the best product in the world, and no one knows about it, and you're not going to have a successful company. Or you could have the best marketing in the world and everyone knows your company, but you've got nothing that anyone wants to buy and you're not going to have a great company. You could have, you know, great marketing and a great product, but your sales team, you know, doesn't know how to go out there and get people to use the product or buy the product, and then it doesn't matter. So, you know, I think to the extent that you can think of a company as a symphony, you can't just have the string section or the woodwinds or the percussion. They all have to play together to really work.”
