The Exchanges

Every argument clarity score on this site is built from rows on this page. Each question and answer was assessed with names hidden, the host's own answers included, on four things from 1 to 5: directness (does it answer the question asked), coherence (do the ideas follow), precision (concrete details and clear references), compression (says a lot per word). The weighted mix (30/30/25/15) is the exchange score. A person's published score averages their exchange scores on raw tape only, at least 8 of them, shrunk toward the cohort mean. Full method →

Every exchange below was scored with names hidden, four dimensions each from 1 to 5. An exchange's score is 0.30·directness + 0.30·coherence + 0.25·precision + 0.15·compression. The published score averages the raw tape exchange scores and shrinks small samples toward the cohort mean, so five great answers can't beat twenty good ones. Produced feed rows count only toward coarse estimates, never toward a full score.

Q Very cool. I mean, were you selling? Okay, well, we will, we won't go there, but then you went to Wall, you went from vending to Wall Street. Why Wall Street?

A Oh, um, so I was selling flowers, and I was playing music in a band with my buddy, and now I turned 25, and something happens, I think, when you turn, at least for me, when I think for a lot of, a lot of guys, um, you start to have this, like, uh, you know, holy crap, what am I going to do with my life moment? And, um, and so I had that, and, and for me, 25 was around 1996, and, um, and, uh, and that was the very early part of, of what was Um, kind of feeling like there was something interesting happening in Silicon Valley, right? Like Yahoo was 12 bucks. Cisco was just getting off the ground. Um, and, and there felt like there was this kind of like renaissance of, of something big going on in Silicon Valley. And I wanted to be a part, I lived in Silicon Valley. I grew up in Half Moon Bay. Um, but, um, but I didn't, you know, I, I was a college dropout and I didn't, I wasn't an engineer and I was like, how am I going to get a piece of, of this? And, um, and so I just started kind of studying and looking and what I found was that you could get a piece of it by learning how to trade. And, uh, so, um, uh, you know, several things, coincidences led to, uh, me ending up moving to New York City and, and, uh, going through the grueling process of, of learning to trade stocks.
