Delian Asparouhov argues that operational experience has become increasingly essential for achieving top-tier performance in modern venture capital.
“And if you look at, you know, sort of top hundred on the Midas list, for VCs, they started their careers sort of pre-thousand-twelve called versus post-thousand-twelve. Pre-thousand-twelve, there was definitely a large number of investors that were pure sort of financial, you know, analysts, you know, early on their career. Bill Gurley is an example, Mary Meeker you know, Michael Moritz, you know, from the Eastern journalism world. Tons of investors that you can point to that very much so did not have this operational background. As you start to look at, you know, sort of as it becomes, and onwards when people start their venture career, it becomes much, much heavier in that sort of top stratus of, you know, best venture investors. A much higher percentage of them end up having significant, you know, sort of operating experience.”
