Instacart founder Apoorva Mehta explains the core strategic differentiation that allowed Instacart to compete against Amazon in grocery delivery.
“I realized in order to sort of really compete with them, I would have to do something that's meaningfully different, and it couldn't be something that was just, it was like cheaper or anything like that, because Amazon has gobs and gobs of money, so it wasn't that. It just had to be something that they just wouldn't be able to do, and it turns out there are a lot of retailers across the country where people really want to shop from, people get their favorite types of groceries from, And they don't like Amazon. And so to me, it was the ability to sort of build something for the retailers to be able to compete with Amazon was the way to go.”
