After winning Venezuela's 2023 opposition primary, she was disqualified from public office by the Maduro regime and subsequently led the campaign backing candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. A longtime critic of the government and co-founder of Súmate, she was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for defending democratic rights.
