In 1977, Carpenter founded Burton Snowboards in Vermont, developing early board designs, bindings, and technologies that transformed the sport globally. He established events like the U.S. Open Snowboarding Championships and successfully campaigned for ski resorts across the world to allow snowboarders on their slopes.
