The Exchanges

Every argument clarity score on this site is built from rows on this page. Each question and answer was assessed with names hidden, the host's own answers included, on four things from 1 to 5: directness (does it answer the question asked), coherence (do the ideas follow), precision (concrete details and clear references), compression (says a lot per word). The weighted mix (30/30/25/15) is the exchange score. A person's published score averages their exchange scores on raw tape only, at least 8 of them, shrunk toward the cohort mean. Full method →

Trip Adler no published score: no usable exchanges on raw tape, and a fair score needs 8+ record → ← everyone

Every exchange below was scored with names hidden, four dimensions each from 1 to 5. An exchange's score is 0.30·directness + 0.30·coherence + 0.25·precision + 0.15·compression. The published score averages the raw tape exchange scores and shrinks small samples toward the cohort mean, so five great answers can't beat twenty good ones. Produced feed rows count only toward coarse estimates, never toward a full score.

Q Going down that funding path. So up to us today, how much total capital has been infused?

A We raised fifty million at this point. So, so basically the trajectory was, um, it was the first 12,000 from Y Combinator. Then we raised 40,000 in angel money. Um, and then, and then at that point we got some tractions. We really quickly went to raise three and a half million from, uh, from red point and then another 10 from CRV and then another 10 from Silicon Valley Bank, and then another 25 from Coastal Ventures. Uh, I think that adds up to 50, but I got my math wrong. Um, so it's about 50 to date. Um, and at this point we're profitable, so we're just living off profits, uh, and, which is a, which is a good spot to be. We're not really intending to, to raise any more money for the time being.

Q Where has most of that capital gone? Headcount or just channels where the CAC to LTV worked and you wanted to just pour more money in those channels?

A So for us, it's really, it's two things. It's, uh, it's headcount and it's content. So, so we don't actually pay for users. Um, you know, we started the service as just a free service for publishing and sharing content, and it today reaches over a hundred million monthly users. Um, so, uh, we basically just market our subscription service to those hundred million users. We don't, uh, have to actually pay for, uh, for marketing. We pay for a little bit, but just a small amount. Um, so, uh, so our two costs are really just hiring good people, hiring good, uh, Um, engineers and designers and, um, all types of, uh, people to build, build the product. And then also on the, uh, on the content side, we, we go to, we do deals with, uh, book publishers, with magazine publishers, the newspapers, and we make all that content available through the subscription model.
