The Exchanges

Every argument clarity score on this site is built from rows on this page. Each question and answer was assessed with names hidden, the host's own answers included, on four things from 1 to 5: directness (does it answer the question asked), coherence (do the ideas follow), precision (concrete details and clear references), compression (says a lot per word). The weighted mix (30/30/25/15) is the exchange score. A person's published score averages their exchange scores on raw tape only, at least 8 of them, shrunk toward the cohort mean. Full method →

Every exchange below was scored with names hidden, four dimensions each from 1 to 5. An exchange's score is 0.30·directness + 0.30·coherence + 0.25·precision + 0.15·compression. The published score averages the raw tape exchange scores and shrinks small samples toward the cohort mean, so five great answers can't beat twenty good ones. Produced feed rows count only toward coarse estimates, never toward a full score.

Q You were the original. You were the OG of Silicon Valley. The original gangster marketer. OGM. Okay, Nyland, so tell me about Brain Chase. When did you get involved, and why CMO?

A So Brain Chase is a super fun product, and I got involved about a year ago. Um, I was, I knew the, uh, the founder, the CEO, and founding couple, the founding team, um, from my husband's business school experience, and I just loved what they were doing, and I have three daughters of my own who are Brain Chase aged, which is between second and eighth grade, and I had actually had my daughters do Brain Chase, um, The previous summer. And so when our friend approached me and said, I'm looking for, uh, somebody to help with marketing, I raised my hand and said, you know, pick me. So it's been really, really fun. And the, one of the reasons that we do this is because one of our co-founders, Heather Staker, is actually, uh, the premier researcher, uh, In the world on blended learning, which is the idea of bringing technology into the classroom. She just wrote the book called Blended. Um, and she travels all over the world, in fact, talking about how to bring technology into the classroom. So she has this, this, um, unique perspective into what makes a good online, um, curriculum provider. So we've vetted and, and brought those together, and we've created a proprietary s…

Q How bad was it in your company? How much was raised, and then how, did investors lose all the value?

A Um, you know, to, to be honest, I was 22 years old, and all I cared about was that I still had a job, so I, I actually got promoted three times the first year I was there, um, because there was, the way was cleared by other people, um, who unfortunately were not able to stay, uh, during the layoffs, so it was a kind of strange thing, but I did live right downtown San Francisco, and it was funny to see from 99 to 2001 how, The sort of culture of downtown really changed. It went from being a bustling place with all these young people to being very quiet, you know, a sort of traditional financial district feeling. And now, of course, it's completely back on its game.
