The Exchanges

Every argument clarity score on this site is built from rows on this page. Each question and answer was assessed with names hidden, the host's own answers included, on four things from 1 to 5: directness (does it answer the question asked), coherence (do the ideas follow), precision (concrete details and clear references), compression (says a lot per word). The weighted mix (30/30/25/15) is the exchange score. A person's published score averages their exchange scores on raw tape only, at least 8 of them, shrunk toward the cohort mean. Full method →

Every exchange below was scored with names hidden, four dimensions each from 1 to 5. An exchange's score is 0.30·directness + 0.30·coherence + 0.25·precision + 0.15·compression. The published score averages the raw tape exchange scores and shrinks small samples toward the cohort mean, so five great answers can't beat twenty good ones. Produced feed rows count only toward coarse estimates, never toward a full score.

Q So tell me more about kind of the history here. Did you found the company and then sold to WPP, or did WPP put you in after the acquisition?

A Um, the, the, the company was created in 2008. So it was founded as a Berlin based startup. And what they used to do at the beginning was to offer, uh, uh, what we call an unsigned recommendation engine. So basically we were providing content recommendations on the publisher website. The following year, they added a, uh, uh, let's say an ad spawned the third revenue to the mix. So basically, instead of just recommending, recommending publisher articles, we were also adding ads to the mix. Um, and then the company grew, uh, we really focused on the German speaking market. And in 2014, WPP came in and acquired a company. And this was, it was great, um, uh, obviously for the founders. I was not, uh, I was not there at the time, but it really helped the company scale, um, internationally. So, you know, starting in 2014, we were able to, to expand, uh, globally. And right now we're, uh, operating in, in more than 25 markets.

Q and walk me through kind of where you see this space going. So a few things, a lot of people, I mean, we just saw actually recently Unilever basically threatening Google and Facebook with, with some of the content issues that's popping up. A lot of people are starting to, you know, take some of this stuff in house for various reasons. What threats do you see to your market?

A Uh, I would say, um, uh, I, I, I think in business in general, uh, is, you know, you need to focus on customers and you need to deliver value. And, uh, you know, delivering value to customers sounds a bit like a big buzz, uh, corporate buzzword, but ultimately that's the, the, uh, the name of the game. I think what has happened in the past years is that some companies as You know, they took the money and they, uh, they delivered clicks. Um, and, um, some of them might have lost touch with, uh, you know, what the client really values. Uh, when you see things like transparency, like brand safety that you're mentioning with, um, uh, Unilever's, uh, threats, I think we, we have to go back to, uh, you know, really providing value. And that means you look at, I would say advertisers have become more sophisticated. And when they look at campaign, uh, objectives, you know, they used to think about impressions or clicks. Now I would say that there are things are a bit more refined and, and, and specific. So we just need to make sure that we deliver, uh, what the client is asking for.
