The Exchanges

Every argument clarity score on this site is built from rows on this page. Each question and answer was assessed with names hidden, the host's own answers included, on four things from 1 to 5: directness (does it answer the question asked), coherence (do the ideas follow), precision (concrete details and clear references), compression (says a lot per word). The weighted mix (30/30/25/15) is the exchange score. A person's published score averages their exchange scores on raw tape only, at least 8 of them, shrunk toward the cohort mean. Full method →

Every exchange below was scored with names hidden, four dimensions each from 1 to 5. An exchange's score is 0.30·directness + 0.30·coherence + 0.25·precision + 0.15·compression. The published score averages the raw tape exchange scores and shrinks small samples toward the cohort mean, so five great answers can't beat twenty good ones. Produced feed rows count only toward coarse estimates, never toward a full score.

Q You have such a fun operating kind of background. Why jump onto the dark side and do a fusion fund?

A Yeah. Lots of my friends kind of joke about, okay, now you went to dark side, start to do investing. Especially when I first launched my fund back in 2015. But my feeling is when I was an entrepreneur, and as you said, an operator, I found it's not easy for a technical funder, and also especially funder with strong background in the healthcare, our technology, to fundraise. It's because they want to fund investors to better understand the technology, and also understand the life cycle of the startup companies. So I kind of feel my background could be a good fit To really help the founder at the earlier stage and become their buddy in the dark side and help them to grow the company in the long term.

Q equity, VC, et cetera. They look at what you do and they go, man, one day I want to do what Lou did. I want to go out and raise my own fund. Walk me through where your head was at when you decided to go, you know, ask for your first capital for the fund. And I believe it was what a 70 or eighty million dollar fund, right?

A Yeah, so actually my fund one was a little bit smaller. It's a sub-twenty million dollar fund, and I did a second fund last year, which was a sub-hundred million dollar fund. So, uh, I was working in another See from at that time, and, uh, I kind of feel like, okay, I saw the whole ecosystem, and I found my passion is with early stage, and I found I'm pretty good at it with my background experience, and I know people who are also awesome who came up with me in the near future, so what I start to do is, uh, I start to talk with lots of the family offices and also potential investors who are interested in tech and healthcare. I tell them the trend, the innovation cycle is It's coming back in 2012 1013. That's a business model innovation and coming to 2014 and 15. That's more about how to really support innovation for fundamental tech and the technology application. So they really appreciate my insights on the industry and also feel the passion to work with me. So I So I, I will have to say I have a relatively easy start, uh, for like, uh, from my first fund. So I got the initial capital from couple LP and start to do investment. And along the way, more and more investor came to me saying that I like your portfolio. I like your strategy. So how we could better work together. So I'm like, okay, I could launch fund two. So that's the fund two last year. So far we have, uh, more than…
