The Exchanges

Every argument clarity score on this site is built from rows on this page. Each question and answer was assessed with names hidden, the host's own answers included, on four things from 1 to 5: directness (does it answer the question asked), coherence (do the ideas follow), precision (concrete details and clear references), compression (says a lot per word). The weighted mix (30/30/25/15) is the exchange score. A person's published score averages their exchange scores on raw tape only, at least 8 of them, shrunk toward the cohort mean. Full method →

Every exchange below was scored with names hidden, four dimensions each from 1 to 5. An exchange's score is 0.30·directness + 0.30·coherence + 0.25·precision + 0.15·compression. The published score averages the raw tape exchange scores and shrinks small samples toward the cohort mean, so five great answers can't beat twenty good ones. Produced feed rows count only toward coarse estimates, never toward a full score.

Q All the trope type parents are laughing about the surprise baby because I feel like a lot of people have been there. So, Brian, break us, break it down for us. If people listening in right now are thinking about, again, getting their first book deal, walk us through how you got the book deal for Shareology and what that looked like. What should, what should new authors expect?

A Um, you know, it really depends on the success, I think, of what, um, you know, what your business has had, and what, how, how sound your, your topic is, and what kind of relationships you have with what publishers. All of that really matters. I would say the biggest thing that you can really do is, is really focus in on your, um, your platform, your message, and your, your book proposal. Um, your book proposal really needs to be sound. And the harder that you work on getting your book proposal right, the better your, uh, book, your book, um, will be accepted if you're, if you truly are looking at, um, getting a publisher. Now, I didn't do a publisher for my first book. I actually thought if I could just get my book published, or sorry, get my book out, it'd be a hell of a lot better than, um, trying to go through all the publishers out there, and so I'm not, I'm not, um, a hundred percent bought into the fact that you have to go through a publisher for your book. Um, the only reason I did it for my second book is because I wanted to get my book into bookstores and cross that off my, my, um, my list, if you will. So, um, that, that is one of the things that publishers have. They can get your book into bookstores, and that's something that, um, you know, they have inside sales distribution models and all that kind of stuff, but If that's not important to you, if what's more impo…

Q great. So it's now, it's now what, uh, October or November, so you've sold 30,000 copies over that time span. You know, for the top tribe listening and wondering, you know, should I write my first book? Is it hard work? What should I do? What would you tell them And,? And tell us to the title of the book so people can pick it up if they want it.

A If you do not, um, if you don't have the time to write a book in, let's say, a year's time frame, don't do it. Um, if you really, really don't have the time, make sure that you have the time to do it, otherwise you're gonna just be upset at yourself, um, unless you're gonna have somebody help you write it. The, uh, the biggest thing about writing a book is that you really, really have to be passionate about your topic. Um, writing a, writing a book, not having that passion over it is just not worth it. Um, now if you have those two things, do it. Do not, do not even think twice about not writing a book. Now you need to write that book because that is your magic formula to your future.
