Meditation teacher Jack Kornfield recalls a historical meeting between Western meditation instructors and the Dalai Lama discussing self-judgment.
“And I remember being in a teacher meeting That we helped to organize with the Dalai Lama decades ago. There was a group of us who were Western meditation teachers, and at one point we said, so what do you suggest we do about all the self-hatred that comes up for many students? So this is taking your question, you know, even one step further. And he got confused. He said, self-hatred? And he went back and forth with his Translator, he said, how many of you have experienced this? And almost every hand in the room went up. And then he said, you know, we don't even have a word for that in Tibetan. We don't get taught that.”
