Ryan Seiders, co-founder of YETI, explains their strategy of prioritizing independent outdoor dealers before expanding to big-box stores.
“Once you get these bigger customers, they start naming their terms and hitting you with all kinds of penalties and stuff like that. And so, I felt like once we started selling to some of these bigger accounts, we had the power to say no when they were trying to push us around because we didn't have to have them. We had a really diverse retailer network that we could sell all the product we could get and all the product that we could manufacture and had the power to not get bullied by any of the bigger guys.”
