Ng: AI Fund avoids broad top-down ideas, requiring concrete use cases

Andrew Ng (Managing General Partner at AI Fund) explains how the venture studio selects and screens startup opportunities in applied AI.
“And so one of the lessons I've learned is we really like concrete ideas. So someone says, I did a market analysis, AI will transform healthcare. That's true, but I don't know what to do with that. But if someone, a subject matter expert or an engineer comes and says, I have an idea, look at this part of healthcare operations and drive vision and all this. They go, okay, great. That's a concrete idea. I don't know if it's a good idea or a bad idea, but if it's concrete, at least we could, you know, very efficiently figure out the customer's wonders, is it technically feasible, and get going. So I find that AI fund when we're trying to decide what to do, we screen a long list of ideas to try to select, you know, a small number that we want to go forward on. We don't like looking at ideas that are not concrete.”
