“My idea was that before a government would do something risky, start a war, start fighting with another country, they're going to tell efforts to tell a story to their people. So the idea was that by looking at domestic media, in particular, editorials, which haven't changed in purpose or meaning for 200 years now, they are efforts to shape opinion. They're direct efforts to say, here's how you should think about a subject matter. To look at newspapers that were closely associated with a government, and I was going to do this across countries, across time, Is there structure there? Can you see a pattern in the opinion-leading efforts in media, the storytelling by governments, to prepare population for war? And the answer is, oh my god, absolutely.”
