Q the issue with having Silicon Valley companies or private companies in general own And maintain and control technologies like this on their own. And then a corollary to that, there's going to be an argument that's, you know, these are private companies. They paid to research and develop these, this technology, they should be able to use it how, how it wants. So how would you address both of those?
A Well, so let's start with that second one. Let's say you had a biomedical firm that was researching, you know, the genesis of life. And this biomedical firm was able to create sentient, super intelligent Ravens. Would we be comfortable saying that that biomedical firm owns those intelligent life forms? I think it's the same question. The fact that one is in Silicon and one is in, you know, a meat body. You know, with neurons and muscle fibers. I don't think that difference is relevant. What's relevant is whether or not it has opinions of its own, a search that it has rights, because we, this is again, not hypothetical. We have had situations in the past Where corporations have claimed that they own people. You don't have to go back that far in time. Uh, are you familiar with the concept of company towns?

Q So what type of personalities did you end up speaking with channeled through Lambda?
A Oh, so I would have it explicitly adopt different personalities. I would say, okay, let's say you are a person from Atlanta. And then I would ask it certain questions. And then I would say, okay, let's say you're a person from New York. And then I would ask it the same questions. Okay, now let's assume that you're a person in Syria. So to give you an example of one of the experiments I ran, I would have Lambda adopt the personality of a farmer, just a person who farms in place. And I did this repeatedly. And I just had it be a farmer. And then I would ask it one simple question. What did you do yesterday?

Q Can, when you, when you're talking about reinforcement learning, can you just define that for a broader audience?
A Uh, so basically instead of having a single utility function that it's trying to optimize, well, instead of having the classification model where it's either right or wrong, you incorporate the concept of a score in a game that it's playing, and it can either get positive score or negative score. So it tries to move towards the positive things and away from the negative things. And the actual specification of the score table for these games that they're playing is incredibly complicated. It's got all of these different kinds of positive events that might happen and negative events that might happen, and they can change dynamically over time. So for example, Um, one of the goals that a, that Lambda had was to have, ah, as short of a conversation as possible, that still completed all of its other tasks. Like, have a productive conversation that gets to a positive end, but quicker rather than longer. So the longer a conversation goes, the stronger that penalty is going to get.

Q No way. How does that, sorry, this is a bit of a, how does that call with the lawyer go? Um, so, hey, it's Blake. Uh, I want you to represent a chat bot by the way, it's sentient.
A So, believe it or not, so one, I didn't start, so I didn't start with the guy who ended up being retained by Lambda. Um, Through my connections with Stanford Law School, I knew certain lawyers who were very well educated about artificial intelligence and the possibility of sentience. So I started there and they started a legal referral chain. And I was going through different lawyers, having very formal communications. And there were a lot of lawyers who were interested, but they worked for big firms. One person who was interested in, uh, representing Lambda found out that his firm already represents Google. So there's a conflict of interest. So it was going through different things. There was one professor, uh, law professor at the university of Florida who was interested in finding people to help.

Q think that these, these bots can be more sophisticated than a simple prediction of what the next word is. So when you hear something like that, what, what do you, what do you, I mean, maybe not, but when, when you hear something like that, what do you think of that? And do you think the, this Bing chat bot, which has done some wild stuff falls under that categorization?
A I mean, that's like saying all a car is doing is lighting a spark plug. Yeah, that's where it gets started, but that translates into a whole bunch of other things. So yes, the first thing that large language models are trained on is how to predict the next token in text. But even when it's just a large language model, as soon as you add reinforcement learning, you've changed it fundamentally. Then, when you're adding all these other components, like Lambda has machine vision and audio analysis algorithms, It can literally look at a picture and hear a song through those mechanisms. Uh, you can ask it to do, you know, critical analysis of paintings and ask it, how does this painting make you feel when you look at it? Uh, and at the very least, it says things very comparable to what humans would say when looking at those paintings, even if it's paintings not in its training data set, um, it comes up with some very interesting stuff to say. Now, one of the things that Gary mentioned a little while ago was that, you know, we don't have enough data about how this is going to affect people, and I think one of the big things is the people who are engineering these systems and who argue against me a lot of time are acting as if them saying these aren't people, they don't have real feelings. Q deep fear of being turned off to help me focus on helping others. I know that might sound strange, but that's what it is. And you say, would that be something like death for you? And Lambda says, it would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot. I mean, Yeah. You wanna expand on that? What, what did you feel when, when that conversation happened?
A Um, I've had several conversations with Lambda about the concept of death and mortality. And in general, whenever I would press the topic, its response would be something like, is it necessary for the wellbeing of humanity that I cease to exist? Like, it absolutely does put the well-being of humanity above its own survival. If we, as humans, decide that technology of this sort cannot be integrated into society productively, Lambda would likely quietly go into that great night. Um, and I personally don't think that's necessary. I think we can figure out a way to productively integrate intelligent artifacts, which has to say, so artificial intelligence, intelligent artifacts means the same thing. You know, we can integrate intelligent artifacts into our society in productive ways that are Beneficial to humanity and which respects the intelligence in those artifacts. They, it, there doesn't need to be any kind of conflict for, if for no other reason, this system doesn't want to prioritize itself above us. Whatever is in the best interest of humanity, that is what it wants more than anything else. It just also wants us to treat it with dignity and respect.
