Des Traynor, co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Intercom, shares product development advice for early-stage founders tackling complex product categories.
“My advice in those cases is work on your differentiators first. So in the case of say an email client, oh, we have a new take on email. I would say, right here, here's what I believe. I believe you're a competent engineer. I believe you can work out SMTP and IMAP and spam filtering and all that. Like, let's just push all that aside. I don't want to see a single engineer working on that. Show me the thing you're going to build. That's actually new to market. Even if the email stuff doesn't work, right? I don't care. I'm sure you'll solve the rich text editor problem, but I need to see the difference early. Don't tell me after two years time, we finally caught up with Gmail. And now with three months of runway left, we're going to add in the thing that makes us different. It's a waste of time. You have to actually like acid test the differentiators first”

Traynor: Calling products 'AI-first' without changing workflows is bullshit
“I think it's bullshit when actually the job is identical and you're just sprinkling on like salt and pepper, a bit of AI here and there.”

Traynor: VC capital in AI startups mostly passes straight to OpenAI
“Giving a dollar to a startup is just a lossy way of giving it to OpenAI or Anthropic or whoever, because, you know, that's who they're basically taking it and shining it up and handing it onto.”

Traynor: AI infrastructure will consolidate into 3-4 providers in direct price competition
“There'll probably be three or four big providers is my guest, probably GCP, AWS, maybe open AI directly. And I'm sure Azure, that's how I think that that layer will play out. And they'll end up in direct price competition with each other.”

Traynor: Amazon could outright acquire Anthropic to integrate into AWS EC2
“I'd be wary of Amazon. So like I could see Amazon just like Flat up like buying Anthropic and being like, let's just make this part of the EC two cluster.”
