The Exchanges

Every argument clarity score on this site is built from rows on this page. Each question and answer was assessed with names hidden, the host's own answers included, on four things from 1 to 5: directness (does it answer the question asked), coherence (do the ideas follow), precision (concrete details and clear references), compression (says a lot per word). The weighted mix (30/30/25/15) is the exchange score. A person's published score averages their exchange scores on raw tape only, at least 8 of them, shrunk toward the cohort mean. Full method →

Lisa Wu no published score: only 4 usable exchanges on raw tape, and a fair score needs 8+ · coarse estimate ≈4.5/5 from 4 raw tape exchanges record → ← everyone

Every exchange below was scored with names hidden, four dimensions each from 1 to 5. An exchange's score is 0.30·directness + 0.30·coherence + 0.25·precision + 0.15·compression. The published score averages the raw tape exchange scores and shrinks small samples toward the cohort mean, so five great answers can't beat twenty good ones. Produced feed rows count only toward coarse estimates, never toward a full score.

Q Okay, absolutely. And do you, do you see any, are there any sectors that you prefer, do you think? Are you drawn to one sector above another? I mean, you mentioned your previous startup. Do you, do you have any passion or, uh, desire to enter one industry?

A Yeah, you know, I would say, I can speak from an investment standpoint. So, currently, I'm probably most excited by marketplaces, which are, ah, platforms that don't hold inventory, but instead connect sellers who have it to buyers who want it. And they're typically hard to get off the ground, but when they are successful, these marketplaces benefit from these things called network effects that result in these winner-take-most dynamics. So, it just means that when they get bigger, they actually get stronger. And for winners, this ends up being very defensible, and they can create billion-dollar businesses. So, you know, we've seen a number of great marketplaces emerge and thrive in just many sectors of the economy these past few years. Uh, you might be familiar with, you know, Uber and transportation. Absolutely. Yeah, Grubhub and food order and delivery. Um, so I think that's the area that excites me the most. And, you know, at Northwest, we've made several bets on marketplaces. We were, um, The Series A investor in this company called Lending Club, which is a marketplace for peer-to-peer lending.

Q Do you still have that entrepreneurial drive deep down? Do you think one day you might want to start your own again?

A Yeah, you know, I, I definitely do. Um, fortunately with the setup I have in Norwest is I, I actually was brought on to open our New York office, so I'm able to kind of apply some of my entrepreneurial skill sets to do that, but there's definitely an itch inside, and although I'll tell you the truth, what happens in venture is the longer you stay in, it's almost harder for you to go start a business because your bar becomes super high because you understand all the challenges and how difficult it is to actually scale a business, Um, so eventually at one point I'd like to, um, I think it just really has to be the right idea.
