The Exchanges

Every argument clarity score on this site is built from rows on this page. Each question and answer was assessed with names hidden, the host's own answers included, on four things from 1 to 5: directness (does it answer the question asked), coherence (do the ideas follow), precision (concrete details and clear references), compression (says a lot per word). The weighted mix (30/30/25/15) is the exchange score. A person's published score averages their exchange scores on raw tape only, at least 8 of them, shrunk toward the cohort mean. Full method →

Every exchange below was scored with names hidden, four dimensions each from 1 to 5. An exchange's score is 0.30·directness + 0.30·coherence + 0.25·precision + 0.15·compression. The published score averages the raw tape exchange scores and shrinks small samples toward the cohort mean, so five great answers can't beat twenty good ones. Produced feed rows count only toward coarse estimates, never toward a full score.

Q semi answers the question I was about to ask. So, because you have a slightly different angle of being less, you know, focused on the purely technical, what, what kind of teams do you like? Uh, at a very practical level, like somebody who wants to come to you and pitch, what, what, what do they, uh, you know, look like as a team in terms of, of core capabilities?

A Sure. So, ironically, because I'm not technical, and I'm more focused on this other stuff, I attract all the super geeks. Um, which is okay for me, because it's complimentary. Um, but, but I'd say I zoom out, and for me, partly because I'm not technical, just partly my nature in being in this business for 30 years, um, I always over index on people. So for me, I'm looking for Courage. Character. Conviction. Somebody with a soul. Because, you know, I've lived it. I've built companies. I know that, you know, and it's probably controversial with the Facebook generation, you know, or these people that have watched too many reruns of the social network, or, you know, they're recent graduates of Techstars where you can be an entrepreneur in, in six weeks. It doesn't happen that way. Um, it takes six, 10 years. It's a marathon. And it's a tremendous amount of sacrifice, and you don't do it for money. You don't do it to be, you know, on TV or run around in wine parties like this. You do it because you have to do it. Because you wake up and you can't go work at Bloomberg or IBM. You have to go build stuff with people. And those are the people I look for. And then those people, they figure it out.

AI assessment note: “I always over index on people. So for me, I'm looking for Courage. Character. Conviction.”
