“And Walmart was on the march, and all the supermarket companies were, and there were lots of independents back then before the chains, sort of, that changed too over, over time, but they were all terrified of Walmart, and so they, and they wanted to compete with Walmart on price, so they began to kind of cut labor, Cut back on their capital expenditures. Their stores became uglier, and that made them more price competitive, but their stores were less attractive to shop in, and that became, in some ways, Whole Foods opportunity, because we made beautiful stores, and we gave great service, and yeah, we were a little more expensive, but lots of people were willing to pay for a better experience and higher quality food.”
