Jack Altman, co-founder and CEO of Lattice, explains the core paradox founders face between having the hubris to disrupt an industry and the humility needed to grow.
“And this is one of the great paradoxes is that to, you know, have the hubris to start a company and to think that you're going to change some big and existing industry, you kind of have to feel in a certain way, like above the sort of normal decisions and the normal sort of operating of that industry. And so you have to have this Relentless self-belief, and you have to be willing to, in the face of everybody telling you you're wrong, or that what you're saying doesn't make sense, that you're actually right. But at the same time, you need to then have the humility to realize, like, wow, I need to grow tremendously if I want this thing to work. Unless you're, you know, a second or third time founder, and you've had a lot of that growth, and you're running a playbook, but even that person's going to need to learn a lot of things the next time around. And so this is one of the tricks, is you have to hold in your head simultaneously, I believe that I am uniquely suited to do this thing that most people are going to doubt me on, and that they're wrong, and I'm right, and I don't know so much, and I'm not even close to capable of running the company that we're going to be in two years, and so I need to change fast if I want to stay effective in my role.”
